Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Lagos, Nigeria

Whew! It’s good to be back! Four days felt like eternity with the lies and pretence I had to keep up with, I search for Daniel in the crowd, spot him and run into his arms.

Daniel: “well, somebody definitely missed me!”

“Yes I did…I really did”

Daniel: “well I missed you too. So, how was your trip?”

“It was alright. Oh please don’t ask me about the wedding! Cause I was fake smiling all through!”

Daniel: “how was the wedding?”

Daniel: “Alright alright! hehehehhee! Let’s go home”

One month later…

The past few weeks have been eventful, more than I could have ever imagined possible_

“…grr! Grr! Grr! Grr! Hello? Hey”

Daniel: “Hello…”

“How are you?”

Daniel: “Fine.”

“Eeermmm…you haven’t called me all week in fact we’ve barely spoke in the past three weeks what’s going on? Did I say or do something?”

Daniel: “I’ve just been really busy that’s all”

“I know but it’s so unlike you…”

Daniel: “I’m really sorry babe I have to go now, talk to you later…”

I sit for several minutes wondering if there’s really something wrong or if I’m just being paranoid. Shortly after I receive a call from my mother saying she’s back in Nigeria with Anthony and that a certain Aunt of mine had accidentally spilled the beans on the truth of our relationship, meaning he’s found out her real age. And now Anthony will rather hear the truth from me, so I pack up a few things and head back home for a week and somehow managed to damage things beyond repair. Thus, Anthony returned to South Africa without my mother and then this happened_

Mum: “are you happy now?! Are you satisfied?! You witch! You have brought me nothing but bad-luck!”

“But how is this my fau_”

I feel two successive slaps across my face and that unlocks something deep within me and all the hurt I’d kept hidden over the years came bubbling to the surface, threatening to choke me.

“Okay mother! I have had enough of you! I have endured your torture long enough! Nothing I ever do impresses you! Why are you so bent on punishing for what my father did?! You think I chose to come to this earth as your daughter?! So you got raped and had me! That was 21 years ago! Grow up and get over it already, the world has since stopped revolving around you! I wish more than anything that I was never born!”

And for the first time in my life, my mother is speechless. In anticipation of another set of slaps I gather my things and head back to Daniel’s place.
